Packing the right clothes for a new destination is fraught with difficulty. You want to make sure you are prepared, but you don’t want to pack too much if there is a chance of shopping either. All it takes is a little planning, and some clever use of the clothing you have packed.

If the evenings are warm, you can get away with a wrap and a strappy top, or a nice skirt. A wrap to throw over your shoulders is a good idea, in case it gets chilly. A thin shawl can’t double as a swimsuit cover, but can work for evening wear. The shorts you wore to the beach can be dressed up with nice sandals and a belt to see you through the evening as well.

You will want to take at least one or two warmer jackets in case it does get cooler, one of which should be fairly water resistant. One or two pairs of trousers should suffice, nothing too warm, but take a pair of pantyhose to help if it does cool down that much. Jeans are always a good call and they are easy to dress up with a cute belt or  sarong around your hips.

You can wear sarongs and bathing suits for both day and night and easily pack and wash and dry them. Utilizing accessories and picking pieces that can be mixed and matched is a good way to not over pack your suit case.

Things to do on a Cruise, My story:

At Coki Beach, my partner hired her snorkeling gear for $20 US ( I brought my very own ). To my continuing surprise, the rental attendant gave us each a tough biscuit to feed the fish while we were in the water. After we got into the water, many tropical fish right away crowded around us. We ripped off tiny pieces of the biscuits and the fish went for it, whether or not the food was just inches away from our face masks. The yellowtail snappers, sergeant majors and occasional parrotfish displayed no fear of us . At one time, my partner held out a bigger piece of her biscuit and some of the fish darted in to nibble at it. After roughly an hour in the warm water, it was time to say bye to our new marine mates. This experience at Coki Bay with the fish was one of the factors which at last influenced my partner to become a certified scuba diver herself. Another $15 US taxi ride took us back to the cruise liner port where we spend the remainder of the day skimming the various Tax Free shops located there. An identical snorkeling trip organized thru the cruiseship would have cost us double the amount we paid. St Thomas is certainly not a cheap island for either liner passengers or resort travellers staying there but additional comfort and quality of the island are quite obvious matched against lots of other Caribbean destinations. From my readings, the other main islands of the US Virgin Islands which are St John and St Croix, are rather more relaxed and less commercialised than St Thomas. I want to visit them as well as another return trip to St Thomas in the future for a multi day underwater diving trip. For those thinking about going on a Caribbean cruise, I’d definitely suggest one which has St Thomas as one of its ports of call. It is among the better islands on any Caribbean cruise check-list.
