This festival has its roots in the yearly celebrations offered by the ancient Inca people to their God of the Sun. Spanish Conquest

Along with all aspects of the once peaceful and prosperous Inca culture, Inti Raymi and the Inca faith was shaken to its foundations by the arrival of the European Conquistadors in the late 16th century. The forcible conversion to Christianity and the great sufferings that the Inca people suffered at the hands of their new, Spanish overlords precipitated a general disintegration of many of the Incan rituals and customs. Inti Raymi itself was banned in 1572 by the Viceroy Toledo and designated as a ‘pagan’ ritual. Thereafter, the ceremony was forced underground, kept secret from the oppression of the Spanish Inquisition by those desperate to keep the Incan rituals and customs alive.

Today, the new Peru is a very different place from the oppressive environment it became in those violent centuries of conquest and inquisition. Inti Raymi, along with a general appreciation of Inca culture in all its forms, has resurfaced and become one of the leading festivals in the entire world, the second largest celebration of Native customs on the entire American continent. Many hundreds of thousands of people converge on the Cuzco region during the month of July from all over South American and the entire world to witness the great spectacle of the festival in full swing.

Events continue for several days, as the festival is simply on too large a scale to be contained in one 24 hour slot. The centerpiece of the festival, though, is without a doubt on the 24th of June – the original date of the actual Inti Raymi celebration – when an entire days dance, music, eating and drinking climaxes in the afternoon sun with a series of rituals kept alive through all the centuries from the original Incan traditions, at the very centre of which is the (cleverly staged) sacrifice of a white llama, then the ritual clearing of streets (to ward off evil spirits) to make way for the procession of the invoked God known to the Incan’s as Sapa Inca, carried to the ancient fortress of Sacsayhuamán on a golden throne, a complete replica of the original used by the Incan’s themselves (which was made of actual gold and weighed more then 60 kilos). To round off the fantastic ritual of Sapa Inca, the ritual returns to Cuzco after a massive fire is lit to celebrate the so called ‘Empire of the Four Winds’. With the conclusion of the festival the Gods have been appeased, have spoken to the people, and a new year has begun.

For all visitors to Peru, a trip to the awe inspiring Inti Raymi festival cannot enough be recommended. It is advisable to stay in one of the areas many hostels or hotels for the duration of the festival, as like most Latin American festivals it cannot be appreciated in less than a good few days.
