Lima was founded in 1535 after its foundation in a short period of time became one of the most important cities in the Americas. Today, with more than twelve million inhabitants, and the city shelters immigrants from all places around the world, which has transformed it into a cosmopolitan city. The UNESCO placed its historic centre on the World Cultural Heritage List; here you can visit splendid samples of Colonial architecture like the Cathedral, the Convent of Santo Domingo, and the Convent of San Francisco as well as delightfully wood carven balconies. Lima is also an endless source of culture, demonstrated by the existence of many and diverse museums like the National Museum of Archeology, Anthropology, and History and the Rafael Larco Herrera Archeological Museum, which guards invaluable Incan and pre-Incan treasures.

The enigmatic citadel of Machu Picchu (Now one of the new 7th wonders of the world), the most important and magnificence legacy of the ancient Peruvian is part of the Historic Sanctuary of the same name, which is also one of the few places in the Americas placed on both the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Lists by UNESCO. It is located high on top of a mountain and complements the exuberant nature that surrounds it, creating one of a kind place in the world. Machu Picchu has lost none of its mystery in the ninety years since its discovery.

The Birds of Villa

Its strategic location (on the route of intercontinental migrations) and its abundant food supply make the Villa wetland a resting place for 160 species of birds from all over. In addition to the resident species, each summer the wetlands receive birds from North America (escaping the cold winter) and from the Caribbean. Species natives to southern Chile and Argentina make use of Villa for the same reason.

Completing this legion of seasonal visitors are the migrant birds that descent from the heights of the Andes (July to September) to seek food and shelter on the coast during periods of scarcity in their usual habitat.
