The Mangrove Sanctuary of Tumbes that is composed of extensive aquatic forests that create a one of a kind environment between the river and the sea is home to black hawks, egrets, and other birds. The downtown of the Arequipa city, placed on the World Cultural Heritage list by UNESCO, features Mixed Baroque churches and mansions from the Colonial Period like the Monastery of Santa Catalina, a Spanish city in miniature with stone streets, beautiful patios, and plazas. The Goyeneche Palace, Casa del Moral, and the district of Yanahuara, a point of confluence for visitors seeking a view point of the urban geography of the city. Sabandia, Tiabaya, and Tingo, located among the large fields, are must see places and the irresistible Arequipa cuisine is the perfect complement to the visit. The Colca Canyon is an impressive geological formation carved out by the river as it has descended between the mountains (made of largely volcanic materials) over million years. The area of greatest interest to tourists begins at the town of Chivay and continues north west for more than 60 km until reaching the lookout known as the Cruz del Condor near the town Cabanaconde. From here, the valley narrows significantly, giving origin to the fame of the Colca Canyon as one of the deepest in the world.
