Apurimac And Ampay Sanctuary in Peru

Apurimac is a region in central Peru. The terrain in Apurimac is steep, formed by narrow, deep valleys with impressive abysses, cold plateaus, and high-mountain peaks. The Apurimac River Canyon that separates the Region of Cusco from the Region of Apurimac is the most extraordinary sight.

Abancay, capital of Apurimac, is a beautiful Colonial city protected by the mighty snow covered Mount Ampay, located in the sanctuary of the same name. The inhabitants of this region make a living primarily through agriculture, and they are descendents of diverse ethnic groups who were known for their warrior spirit. The area was also the scene of bloody confrontations between the rival neighboring tribes of the Chancas and the Incas.

You have to visit Saywite an arqueological site located in the upper Curahuasi valley. This place, originally an Inca town, is the site of the famous Saywite stone, a semispherical monolith weighing several tons and carved with a hundred of men, animals, plants and buildings of the Andean world.

Another important city in Apurimac is the typical Andean city of Andahuaylas with its Main Square and narrow streets.

This sanctuary, located 6 km north of Abancay, at the foot of the imposing Mount Ampay, protects the last highland forest of itimpa (Podocarpus oleifolius), the only conifer native from Peru. It also contains beautiful small lakes. You can’t miss the Uspacocha or “Ash Lake” and the Ankascocha or “Hawk Lake”. There are numerous species of fauna and flora in danger of extinction, such as the ucumari, or Andean bear, the sachacabra, or dwarf deer and the cantuta flower.
