Running in a narrow fringe along the eastern slopes of the Andes, at an altitude of 1,800m to 2,500m (5,900ft to 8,200ft), cloud forests are so named for their intense humidity. The unique, warm and rainy climate and the steep, complex topography produce a lush and diverse flora, characterized by ferns, orchids and bromeliads. Its fauna includes the Andean Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), the Andean cock of the rock (Rupicola peruviana) and the rare Huacharo or Oilbird (Steatornis caripensis), the only nocturnal bird that feeds on fruit. The large number of archeological remains in these forests indicates that they were densely populated in pre-Hispanic times.
